What Do These Ratings Mean?
The live conditions widget above reflects real time swell height and wind speed together for boat crossings between Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands. Swell and wind combined are the biggest factor in how comfortable your fast boat journey will feel, more so than boat type or operator. Here's what each rating actually means for your crossing.
Light Swell
CALM TO LIGHT
Comfortable crossing conditions for most travellers, with gentle swell and light wind working together. Families and first-time visitors should generally enjoy a smooth journey between Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands with minimal boat movement.
Moderate Swell
SWELL, WIND OR BOTH
Some movement can be expected during the crossing, whether from building swell, stronger wind, or a combination of the two. Morning departures are usually calmer and recommended for anyone prone to seasickness, see the departure windows below for timing.
Heavy Swell
ROUGH CONDITIONS
Expect a rough crossing with noticeable movement, driven by larger swell, strong wind, or both together. Check directly with your operator before departure, and consider travelling during calmer morning conditions when possible.

What if seas are rough?
During the wet season, seas can be rougher. Choose larger operators for better stability, and prefer morning departures when conditions are calmest. Check our live weather widget before travelling.

Getting around & luggage
The Gilis are car-free, no motorbikes, cars, or scooters allowed. Cidomo (horse cart) and bicycles handle transport and luggage, with electric scooters also available for getting around. Pack light, bags you can carry beat heavy rollers on sand, and cidomo can move heavy bags from the pier for a small fee.

How early should I arrive?
Almost all boats from Lombok depart from Bangsal or Teluk Nare. Allow 30–45 minutes before departure for parking and check-in, more during peak season (July–August, Christmas). For Bali departures, factor in hotel transfer time, Padang Bai is further than most expect.

Should I book in advance?
During peak season, absolutely, popular Bali routes fill 48–72 hours ahead. Advance booking guarantees your preferred departure window and avoids harbour queues.

Fast boat or public boat?
Fast boats offer fixed departure times and reliable comfort. Public boats leave when full, take longer, and cost significantly less. Most travellers choose fast boats; budget travellers with flexible schedules use public boats.

Take tablets 30 minutes before boarding. Sit mid-boat on the lower deck and keep your gaze on the horizon. Morning departures are always the most settled option, afternoon crossings can be choppier.
