Welcome to Gili Meno

Gili Meno is where everything slows down.

Gili Meno harbour arrival point in the Gili Islands near Lombok
Arriving at Gili Meno, the smallest and quietest of the three main Gili Islands off northwest Lombok.

No traffic. No nightlife competing for your attention. No pressure to fill every hour of the day.

Just long stretches of beach, clear shallow water and a noticeably quieter atmosphere than neighbouring Gili Trawangan and Gili Air.

Sitting between the other two main Gili Islands, Meno is actually the smallest and least developed of the three. It is particularly popular with couples, honeymooners and travellers who deliberately want somewhere peaceful.

But that quieter character also means getting there can require a little more planning.

This guide covers the different ways to reach Gili Meno from Lombok and Bali, travelling between the three Gili Islands, what happens when you arrive, and what to know before booking your boat.

Where Is Gili Meno?

Gili Meno sits just off Lombok’s northwest coast, between Gili Trawangan and Gili Air.

Despite being right in the middle of the three islands, it feels noticeably different.

Gili Trawangan has the biggest choice of restaurants, accommodation and nightlife.

Gili Air balances restaurants and activity with a more relaxed island atmosphere.

Meno is the quiet one.

There are no cars or motorbikes, development remains relatively low key, and much of the island can be explored on foot.

How to Get to Gili Meno

There are several ways to reach Gili Meno depending on where your journey begins.

The important thing to understand is that Meno generally has fewer boat services than Gili Trawangan and Gili Air.

Some services travel directly to Meno, while others may involve another Gili Island as part of the journey.

Always check the actual route and stops when booking rather than assuming every Gili service stops at all three islands.

Getting to Gili Meno From Lombok

For travellers already in Lombok, the northwest coast provides the easiest access to the Gili Islands.

Bangsal Harbour

Bangsal is Lombok’s main public gateway to the three Gilis.

This is generally the best option for travellers looking for an economical crossing or using scheduled local boat services.

If you're travelling from elsewhere in Lombok, remember to allow time to reach Bangsal before your boat departure.

Teluk Nare

Teluk Nare is commonly used for private speedboat transfers and is a convenient alternative for travellers who want a faster and more flexible journey.

Private transfers can make particular sense for couples, families or groups travelling with luggage because you aren't tied to the same scheduled public boat system.

Getting to Gili Meno From Bali

Travelling from Bali involves a substantially longer crossing.

Fast boats operate from Bali towards the Gili Islands from departure points including Padang Bai and Serangan, with services and stopping patterns varying by operator.

Some routes may serve Gili Meno directly. Others may travel via Gili Trawangan, Gili Air or Lombok before an onward connection.

This is one journey where checking the actual itinerary rather than simply the destination printed on the ticket matters.

Padang Bai or Serangan?

Neither port is automatically the best choice for everyone.

Padang Bai can offer a shorter sea crossing from eastern Bali, while Serangan can be more convenient for travellers staying around parts of southern Bali.

Your accommodation location, departure time, operator and sea conditions can all affect which option makes the most sense.

Travelling to Gili Meno From Gili Trawangan or Gili Air

Already staying on one of the other Gilis?

You don't need to return to Lombok.

Inter island boats connect the three main Gili Islands, making it relatively easy to combine them during the same trip.

This opens up one of our favourite ways to experience the islands.

Spend a few days enjoying the restaurants and energy of Gili Trawangan or Gili Air, then move across to Meno when you're ready for somewhere quieter.

Private boats can also provide more flexibility if scheduled departure times don't suit your plans.

Direct vs Indirect Boats to Gili Meno

This is worth checking carefully when booking.

A ticket showing Gili Meno as the destination doesn't necessarily mean your journey operates exactly the same way as a service to Gili Trawangan or Gili Air.

Depending on the operator and departure point, the journey may include intermediate stops or an onward connection.

Public Boat, Speedboat or Private Transfer?

There isn't one boat type that's best for everyone.

Public Boat

The budget option from Lombok.

Best suited to travellers who aren't working around a tight schedule and are comfortable with a more local transport experience.

Scheduled Fast Boat

Most relevant for longer routes, particularly travellers arriving from Bali.

Operator, vessel, departure port and route matter, so compare the journey rather than choosing purely on price.

Private Speedboat

The easiest option from Lombok when flexibility matters.

Private transfers are particularly useful for families, groups, travellers carrying more luggage or anyone who simply wants to reach the island with minimal fuss.

What Are the Sea Conditions Like?

Conditions around the Gili Islands change throughout the year and can also change during the day.

Wind, swell, weather and the route you're travelling all affect the crossing.

Rather than relying purely on general seasonal advice, check the conditions close to your departure.

What Happens When You Arrive on Gili Meno?

This is where the pace changes very quickly.

Gili Meno’s quiet coastline and clear shallow water reflect the slower pace that sets the island apart from neighbouring Gili Trawangan and Gili Air.

There are no cars or motorbikes on Gili Meno, so once you arrive you're travelling on foot, by bicycle or by traditional horse drawn cidomo.

If your accommodation is close to the arrival point, walking may be perfectly practical.

If you're staying farther around the island or travelling with large suitcases, arrange your onward transport or speak with your accommodation beforehand.

What Is Gili Meno Actually Like?

Quiet.

That's simultaneously its biggest attraction and the main reason it isn't right for everyone.

You can snorkel, cycle, walk the beaches, eat at small restaurants and warungs, watch the sunset and spend an impressive amount of time doing absolutely nothing.

There are also well known snorkelling areas around the island, including underwater sculptures and turtle habitat.

But don't come expecting Gili Trawangan.

The restaurant selection is smaller, nightlife is extremely limited, shopping is minimal and the overall atmosphere is intentionally slow.

For the right traveller, that's exactly the point.

Is Gili Meno Right for You?

How Long Should You Stay on Gili Meno?

For most travellers, two or three nights is enough to experience Meno properly.

One night can feel rushed once boat arrival and departure times are factored in.

Three or four nights works beautifully if the whole point of your trip is to slow down.

And if doing very little sounds like heaven rather than boredom, you may not want to leave.

Staying on Gili Meno

Accommodation is smaller scale than on neighbouring Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, but there are some genuinely special places to stay.

Rather than listing dozens of properties, we've selected a small number for different types of traveller.

Book Your Boat to Gili Meno

Whether you're travelling from Lombok, Bali or another Gili Island, compare the route rather than choosing solely on price.

Look at the departure port, operator, stops, journey time and whether your ticket takes you directly to Gili Meno.
