BOAT PARTNERS
Who you'll be travelling with
We work with two trusted operators, each suited to different routes and travel styles. They're not competing for the same journey, they're matched to different ones, so the right choice usually depends on where you're headed rather than which is "better."
⚠️
A note on timing. Fast boat schedules in this region shift more than travellers expect, and it's almost always weather, not poor operation. These are local, sea-going vessels crossing open water, not a scheduled train or a large cruise ship that absorbs rough conditions. Departure times can move by 30 to 60 minutes depending on swell and wind, and on rare occasions a crossing can be delayed or cancelled entirely for passenger safety. Build buffer time into your plans, avoid booking a tight same-day onward flight, and check live conditions on our Gili Marine Index before you head to the harbour. This isn't a flaw in either operator below, it's simply how boat travel works here, and knowing it in advance makes for a much smoother trip.
ESTABLISHED · BANGSAL HARBOUR, PADANG BAI & SERANGAN
BlueWater Express
A professionally run fleet with a strong safety record, built for travellers who want a documented, predictable crossing.
BlueWater Express has operated across Bali, the Gilis, and Lombok for years, steadily modernising its fleet
rather than running the same boats indefinitely. Their newest vessels, launched as recently as 2024, carry meaningfully more safety margin than required, and every boat in the fleet is certified to the International Safety Management standard. If you want a crossing with clear documentation behind it, this is the operator built for that.
The fleet
BlueWater Express XII
Launched 2023 · 84 seats
The newest vessel in the fleet, powered by four Volvo diesel engines. Life raft capacity covers 105 people, well above the 84-passenger limit.
BlueWater Express XII
Launched 2023 · 84 seats
Sister vessel to XIV, same engine setup and the same generous life raft capacity.
BlueWater Express X
Launched 2019 · 70 seats
Six Honda outboards, aluminium-framed seating, full safety equipment as standard.
BlueWater Express IX
Launched 2017 · 70 seats
The fleet's longest-serving vessel, still carrying the same certified safety standard as the newest boats.
Safety standard across the fleet
ISM certified, SOLAS-standard life jackets for every passenger and crew member
EPIRB distress beacon, transmits vessel name and exact location for up to three days if immersed
Marine VHF ship-to-shore radio and GPS navigation on every boat
Full regulation set of distress flares and lifebuoys
Life raft capacity that exceeds passenger limits on every vessel
ROUTES SERVED
Bali (Padang Bai & Serangan), Bangsal Harbour, Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Gili Meno
BALI-BASED · SERVING SENGGIGI
Wahana Virendra
A Bali-based fast boat service, and our main direct option for travellers based in Senggigi.
Wahana Virendra is a Bali-based fast boat service that runs to Lombok via the Gilis, with Senggigi as their Lombok endpoint rather than Bangsal. As a smaller outfit, they don't publish the same level of technical documentation as a larger international operator, but what we've seen onboard checks out: clearly signed life jacket storage above every row of seats, liferafts onboard, and a clean, well-kept vessel. If you're staying in Senggigi, they're one of the more direct ways to reach the Gilis and Bali without first travelling to Bangsal.
What we've confirmed onboard
Life jackets stored above passenger seating, clearly signed
Liferaft listed as standard safety equipment
Air-conditioned cabin, onboard toilet, modern seating
Wahana doesn't publish vessel-by-vessel certification details the way some larger operators do. If specific documentation matters to you, contact them directly via WhatsApp before booking, they're generally quick to respond.
ROUTES SERVED
Senggigi, Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Bali (Padang Bai)
Which operator you'll use mostly comes down to where you're headed. Travelling from Bangsal, Padang Bai, or Serangan, BlueWater Express is the right choice. Staying in Senggigi, Wahana Virendra is your direct option. Either way, build in some flexibility for the crossing itself, the islands are worth a relaxed arrival.
